Social Cohesion

Social Cohesion is not just a program—it is a philosophy embedded across everything we do. In communities fractured by conflict, trauma, and displacement, we recognize the urgent need to rebuild trust, foster inclusion, and promote peaceful coexistence. Our social cohesion program supports individuals and communities to overcome deep divisions caused by armed violence, social stigma, and identity-based exclusion. It provides a structured space for healing relationships, strengthening communal bonds, and promoting mutual understanding—particularly among survivors, returnees, host communities, youth, and faith actors.

Our approach includes dialogue facilitation, inter-group trust-building sessions, participatory peace education, conflict mediation training, and psychosocial group work. We place a special emphasis on community-led reintegration processes, ensuring that individuals formerly associated with armed groups or affected by GBV are not only accepted back but embraced as contributors to shared peace and prosperity. Through youth clubs, women-led peace circles, and traditional leader engagement, we cultivate local champions of nonviolence who can mediate disputes, de-escalate tensions, and mentor others. We also use creative tools—like community theatre, storytelling, and sports—to promote empathy and shared narratives.

Social cohesion at Salama is also practical. We integrate livelihood groups, inclusive project planning, and community service initiatives into our programming, so that individuals learn to cooperate across divides while addressing collective needs. This model ensures that coexistence is not just preached—but practiced. The impact is evident: returnees find a home, survivors regain dignity, and divided communities rediscover what it means to live together. As the social fabric is rewoven, we witness not only fewer conflicts—but a deeper resilience to future shocks.
